Using Windows Backup to protect your data

The description here is for Windows XP, but all other Windows backup utilities should operate in a similar manner.

The way to use the XP backup utility to protect your data is as follows:

Start the backup utility (Start..Program Files..Accessories..System Tools..Backup) in Advanced mode, then:

  1. Job..New..
  2. On the Backup tab, put a tick in the folder that contains the automatic backups (c:\program files\Rycombe\practice management\data\backup)
  3. Select the backup destination (CD?)
  4. Tools..Options..Backup Type tab, select Daily
  5. Job..Save Selections..
  6. On the main screen, select the Backup tab and press start backup
  7. Press the schedule button
  8. Enter a job name
  9. Press Properties
  10. Schedule task "Daily" and select an appropriate time
  11. Press OK

This should then have you up and running with a daily incremental backup that will add all of the new backup files to the backup disk on a daily basis.

Note: This knowledge base article assumes that you are already following the guidelines laid down in the user manual for using the Rycombe Practice Management’s own capabilities to help you backup your data.
